The peak of the 2018 hurricane season is quickly approaching and for many people the impact from Irma and Maria still linger. How secure is your property to withstand a severe storm event?
Biller Reinhart Engineering Group recently completed evaluations of multiple existing buildings to assess wind resisting capacities and/or wind speed threshold categories for a client. Some of the buildings are now affirmed to be designated as hurricane shelters.
Through available construction document reviews, condition surveys, building code research and calculations, buildings were assigned a Classification of Hurricane Category per the current Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale with respective range of gust wind velocities. If pertinent, some recommendations for repair and/or replacement of building elements (hurricane hardening) that could readily be performed to increase a structure’s capacity to endure a hurricane were presented.
