The Peak of 2018 Hurricane Season is Quickly Approaching

Irma GerdThe peak of the 2018 hurricane season is quickly approaching and for many people the impact from Irma and Maria still linger. How secure is your property to withstand a severe storm event?

Biller Reinhart Engineering Group recently completed evaluations of multiple existing buildings to assess wind resisting capacities and/or wind speed threshold categories for a client. Some of the buildings are now affirmed to be designated as hurricane shelters.

Through available construction document reviews, condition surveys, building code research and calculations, buildings were assigned a Classification of Hurricane Category per the current Saffir/Simpson Hurricane Scale with respective range of gust wind velocities. If pertinent, some recommendations for repair and/or replacement of building elements (hurricane hardening) that could readily be performed to increase a structure’s capacity to endure a hurricane were presented.
